Social Work Supervision

Dayirai is passionate about facilitating individuals, families, communities, and organizations’ transformational healing by acknowledging strengths, limitations, and potential complicating factors to work collaboratively to determine the next steps.

Social Work Supervision (Provisional Registration)

Social workers are considered “provisionally registered” with the ACSW until they have completed 1500 hours of supervised practice. Your practicum hours can be credited toward the 1500-hour total if (a) a Registered Social Worker supervised your practicum with the ACSW and (b) the practicum was completed within five years of your application to become a Registered Social Worker. For any outstanding supervision hours, a Provisionally Registered Social Worker must be supervised by an RSW.

Social Work Supervision (Psychosocial Intervention Authorization)

Per the Government Organization Act (RSA 2000) Schedule 7.1, psychosocial intervention is defined as the practice of “treating a substantial disorder of thought, mood, perception, orientation, or memory that grossly impairs judgment, behaviour, capacity to recognize reality, or ability to meet the ordinary demands of life.” Social workers require psychosocial intervention authorization when they are (a) treating substantial mental health disorders that grossly impair without appropriate supervision and collaboration or (b) training or supervising others in the practice of restricted psychosocial interventions. If you are seeking psychosocial intervention authorization, any regulated health professional who is (a) authorized to perform and supervise restricted psychosocial interventions and (b) is competent to do so may supervise you.

Clinical Supervision

In many cases, therapists are not looking for any additional designation when seeking clinical supervision. Instead, they want to obtain clinical supervision to advance their professional development and enhance their services. As of December 2022, Dayirai is one of only 71 social workers in Alberta with the Registered Clinical Social Work Supervisor (RSCW-S) designation. As described by the Alberta College of Social Workers, an RCSW-S has demonstrated “advanced standing and expertise in the practice area of clinical supervision.” To obtain this designation, Dayirai demonstrated that she had:

  • five years of clinical social work experience
  • completed 30 hours of clinical supervision training and education
  • provided a minimum of 100 hours of clinical social work supervision  received a minimum of 15 hours of supervision of her clinical supervision by another mental health professional
